Postgraduate Strategic Planning.
Developing and Implementing Strategic Plans
FULLY BOOKEDThursday 20th May 2010
London House, Goodenough College, London
1 day
"I am also keen to do some further work on the unique role of postgraduate education, which is often the point where students develop specialist skills to complement a more general undergraduate education. It is also a major export earner for the UK, and one which we have perhaps taken too much for granted." Lord Mandelson
Postgraduate students are becoming increasingly important to institutions' portfolios; yet how much of this growth is planned? Government is concerned that institutions offer value for money and provide courses which support the economy. This workshop takes delegates through the various stages of strategic planning, building up a model that can be adapted and applied at all levels within their home institution. At the end of the workshop delegates will have an understanding of the key elements necessary for a successful strategic plan for postgraduate development.
The workshop will include:
- A review of current trends and opportunities in postgraduate development
- Requirements of market research to establish market opportunities.
- Environmental scanning
- An analysis of the market matrix to assess the split between new developments and existing products
- Alternative programme models: the range of doctoral products and the European Doctorate
- Innovations in masters' developments
- Collaboration
- Where are we now and where do we want to get to
- The need for targets and target setting
- Funding, its importance both to students and institutions
- Programme approval - keeping to the plan
- Marketing the products
- Monitoring and review
